It’s been a long time coming, but finally the City of Waltham is making the safety improvements required by Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). They are street medians at the four grade-level railroad crossings in the city. These medians, or granite curbs, are designed to prevent a driver from jumping lanes and trying to beat a train to the crossing. Such recklessness doesn’t often occur, but when it does it can be calamitous. When the improvements are finally completed and approved by the FRA, the trains will no longer have to blow their horns at every crossing. It’s a deafening sound that has made life miserable for nearby residents.
