The men were there all day. I was there an hour, just long enough to catch them lining their newly dug excavation with plywood sheets. It was one small phase of a much larger project. What was that larger project? I have no idea; I couldn’t get close enough to ask. The day was cold and gray, so I contented myself with these few photos, and went home. The important thing, I reminded myself, is to tell a story—not only with the sequence as a whole, but with each separate photo. Did I succeed? I’ll leave that for you, the viewer, to decide.
