It was a gray day in what had been a gray and stormy March. The calendar said it was spring, but the new buds and shoots apparently hadn’t heard the news yet. The only color in Concord Center was the sidewalk display of the Grasshopper Shop. I made a beeline for it.
This women’s clothing store has been a fixture in Concord, Massachusetts for 45 years—all that time owned by the same family. Years after year, its famous sidewalk display has enriched the street life of the town center.
Yes, the day was gray, but the overcast sky was bright, and happily it shed a neutral light without the blue or red components that often bedevil a photographer. Of course, overcast light is shadowless—unless the sun peeps through—which makes it ideal for taking photos such as these.
