We arrived at the Twisted Tree Café just before closing at 3 pm—just in time to buy iced coffees and pastries. After seating ourselves outdoors, we entered into a long and deep conversation about current events with another café patron, whom we hadn’t met before. It turned out to be an interesting afternoon.
There’s long been a debate among street photographers about the role of the photographer. Purists demand all street photos be candid and anonymous. Truth be told, some famous street photos came about through informal collaboration between subject and photographer. I don’t object to that as long as the resulting photos are faithful to the life of the street. But these little cameo portraits will satisfy the purists: they were both candid and anonymous when taken.
