I’ve always thought of photography as black-and-white because that’s what I grew up with. After all, from the Greek, "photography" means "writing with light" (not with color). Here, I offer in black-and-white eight Steampunk photos I previously presented in color. To my eye, at least, these images have a beauty of their own.
Elliott Erwitt, iconic American photographer, famously declared, "Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive."I agree, and would add the following. I’ve always believed the best photos tell a story. If color is part of the story—as in festivals, fashion or fall foliage—then by all means shoot in color. Otherwise, the emotional impact of color will distract from any story you try to tell.
