My favorite portrait lighting is not that from a formal studio setup—which can be tame and boring—but that coming from a large, sunlit window. Depending  on how a subject’s head is turned relative to the window, it can be considered a form of side-lighting (as here) or back-lighting. It can produce a dramatic effect, often setting the subject's face or hair aglow. Even when the day is overcast, as it was here, there’s magic in the window light.
