On my first visit to the Italian Festival, I asked the lady at the information booth, only half jokingly, "I’m not Italian; can I come in?" Without missing a beat she replied, "Do you like Italian food? Then you’re welcome." Sure enough, then and now, Italian favorites, even pizza, are offered in profusion. However, in this series, I chose to ignore the commercial aspects of the event.
The day was pleasantly warm, almost balmy. But the light was soft, almost shadowless. Flat light begets flat photos. Even heroic efforts in the photo-editor often fail to overcome this act of nature. Here I offer the best of the day’s shoot (after throwing away a far greater number). Incidentally, the two little boys shown are brothers.
