The unseasonably cold spring has not been kind to pansies. I did find some growing in a planter outside Waltham Public Library that were in pretty good condition. They were pansies of one color—red, blue or yellow—and without the dark spots we usually associate with pansies.
Single-color pansies are all the rage now. I see masses of them, all one color, planted in shopping centers and office parks. In this small planter, however, the colors were mixed. Backlit by a low, late afternoon sun, they presented an irresistible photo op.
