Recently, The New York Times published 21 black-and-white photos of the presidential inauguration by a staff photographer, Damon Winter. They were extraordinary images! They testified how a great photojournalist can distill powerful stories from the turmoil around him, and do so in the medium of black-and-white photography.
Mr. Winter won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography. His ability to select, to compose, to capture the decisive moment bowled me over. It made me want to go out and try myself, but the day was cold and blustery, so I contented myself with these modest images from my window. Soon the weather will improve, I told myself; this is New England, after all.
